The French Encyclopedia (Extra Credit)

Reading the articles in Diderot's Encyclopedia is one of the best ways to understand the French Enlightenment. It shows the attitudes of the philosophes toward everything from Islam to Women to Intolerance to History. While the online translation of the Encyclopedia articles does not include the wonderful illustrations of the original, you will probably still find much of interest.

Browse to an article on a topic of interest to you. Comment on what you found particularly interesting in that article.

  1. "God is my Right" God is my right. Dieu est mon droit is the motto or device of the army of England, first taken by Richard the Lionheart who lived at the end of the thirteenth century, which he did to mark that he took his kingdom from no mortal as a vassal.

An interesting quote to me, used in a sense of pride and richeousness. It shows where comes from, and when and by whom it was used. It allows for knowlege on different uses and the circumstances it was used.

  2. Andrea Hilgedick: I read the article "Music". I found that it was interesting because 1) I love participating in music; and 2) it's practically all true. Music is wonderful to listen to and fun to play.

  3. I read the article on the Academy of Painting. It had a good history of how it came to be, how it moved around and how it is today. I was particularly interested in was the Academy of Paris information that talked about how it was open for 2 hours a day for people to go and paint and sculpt.

  5. Dakota Feller: I read the article on Magic, which was really interesting. Mainly because magic is described as different things. They described divine magic which we get from God, they also described magic acheived through art and magic as new scientific discovery. Lastly they described supernatural music which is what I think of.

  6. Andrea Hilgedick: After reading "Centaurs," I think it's a good article. But they shouldn't have put in the word monsters because they aren't monsters- they're creatures even if they don't exist. They're mythological creatures. Not monsters. I'd like to ask the author of that article: 'Ever heard of Narnia'?

  7. Andrea Hilgedick: I also read "Dream." It's good even though there's not much in the article. But then, we don't know everything about dreams.

  8. Donavan Soulek: I read the article on barbarians. I found it interesting that the word comes from the Greeks/ Romans. I found it interesting is that is the name that Greeks gave other nations who did not speak their language. The Romans did the same as the Greek but they called the Greeks not barbarians.

  9. I read the article on "envy". I found interesting because many people suffer from the evil green-eyed monster. However, it was originally described by poets as a monster-like creature that was almost like Medusa with a pale forehead and serpents coming from the head.

  10. I read the article on the elephant, as in the animal (as there is more than one meaning). Elephants are one of my favorite animals. I think the elephant is an interesting animal. Because they are so scary large and overpowering, one would think not to mess with them. I found in the reading that elephants are very peaceful animals and are only irritated when provoked. That is why they can be used in circuses. They can be trained and taught skills so easily, if one only takes the time to work with them.

  11. I decided to do an article on dogfish. I decided on this one because it sounded like a cool animal and possibly interesting. It is indeed interesting! I learned that a dogfish is part of the shark family. It also has an appendix that separates each of its nostrils. I thought that was really weird, but cool at the same time.

  12. I read the article "women." What an interesting article it was! I definitely feel liek this article was written by a man, and not because it was derogatory but becasue it was more like confused rambling to me. Ever paragraph contradicted itself in the end. In one paragraph it stated that a truthful woman is not truthful in all her essence but only partly. She lets you see part of the truth but never all of it. Isn't that how a man operates too?
This article was really interesting, not quite insightful about women but maybe about how some people perceive the concept of women.
