Holiday Extravaganza--Extra Credit

Attending the Holiday Extravaganza (Sunday, December 15) would be a great study break...and a painless way to get a bit of extra material for Final Exam Study Question #6.  Many of the pieces preformed are from 20th century composers, and you could certainly talk about these pieces in connection with the "general tendencies" of 20th century art, music, and literature mentioned in class should you get question 6 as one of your essay choices.

  1. I performed in the Holiday Extravaganza today as part of the Symphonic Band. I don't feel any of the songs performed today really connected with any of the "general tendencies" of 20th century music. They are all easily accessible in today's world with the new technology. I don't feel it really glorified the art itself either. It was more a glorification of Jesus Christ himself, rather than the music.

  2. The Holiday Extravaganza was quite an experience! I actually got to perform with the choir and the chambers choir for this concert. It also was my first college Christmas Concert. As we went through the pieces and evaluated them after the concert, there were really no tendencies present in our songs. The songs were accessible to the average person, it did not glorify art, and it did not undercut traditional standards and values. If anything, it made traditional standards and values noticed. -Danica Fanning

  3. I was able to play in the Holiday Extravaganza with the symphonic band as well as sing with the choir. I didn't find any of the general tendencies of 20th Century because the music was easy to follow along to and listen to for the average person.

  4. Andrea Hilgedick: I performed in the Holiday Extravaganza with the symphony and the choir. It was great to perform, being my first Christmas concert in college.
I was able to even be in the Nov 16th concert, the Dec 5th concert, the Swing Dance, and attend Bat Boy. All were great! College performances are turning out to be a load of fun!

  5. Calvin Cramer: The Holiday Extravaganza is quite the musical experience that I would recommend to everyone who asks about it to attend! The group I was playing with was the Symphonic Band and what an experience that is. The musical selection we played was a very memorable one filled with pieces known by many, however some had very distinguishable 20th changes and inflections to them. Each of the three pieces we played toyed with the original form of the songs we all know, changing the theme, rhythmic pattern, and the key signature, giving the piece a different feel than what some may expect. All in all it was a very fun and enjoyable experience.
